Ambedkar Park is one of the recent editions in the city of Lucknow, which has several other names including Ambedkar Memorial and Ambedkar Udyan. This park was conceived and constructed by Mayawati, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh during her regime in the state. Ambedkar Park is dedicated to prominent leaders like Bhimrao Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule, Shahuji Maharaj, Shri Narayan Guru and several other Dalit leaders. This is among the first park of its kind in the world, which is meant to commemorate important Dalit icons that have played their part in bringing up the down-trodden section of the society and stood for social justice and humanity. The total cost required to build this park is estimated around 7 billion Indian Rupees. More than 2700 professionals including artists, engineers, designer, and labors were part and parcel of this gigantic Ambedkar Park project. There are two foundations discovered in the park, which cost around 30 million INR. You can find more than three thousand elephants inside the park in different size statues. The total cost incurred for constructing 64 elephants (made up of sandstone) is approximately 400 million INR. More than 350 artisans from Rajasthan have worked tirelessly day in and day out to beautify this park. Though it is commonly known as Ambedkar Park but its name was officially changed in May 2000 to Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial.
