Charbagh Railway Station

Lucknow the capital of Uttar Pradesh has two railway lines: Broad Gauge and the Meter Gauge. Lucknow Junction with a railway code of LJN is a meter gauge railway line whereas Lucknow Charbagh station or popularly known as Lucknow Station having LKO as its railway code is for broad gauge trains. This railway station is situated at Charbagh. Various trains like Duronto, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Gorakhpur Express, Lucknow Express and many others have Lucknow Junction as their stops. The amazing building of Lucknow station reflects the architecture and beauty of the entire city. The structure reflects the so called Nawabs of Lucknow.

Lucknow Railway Station

Built in 1923, this beautiful building of Charbagh railway station looks like a palace. Its architecture and design combine the concepts of Rajputs, Awadhi and Mughals. One of the most important and unique thing about Charbagh railway station is that the aerial view of the station appears to be like a chess board game and its dome and pillars look like the pieces of chess board. Charbagh railway station has 9 platforms and various express and slow passenger trains pass from this station.

Lucknow Junction


This station can unofficially be called as a part of Charbagh railway station as it is adjacent and an extension to the Charbagh railway station. This station has 6 platforms and has meter gauge trains running here. However, it also serves as a terminus station for broad gauge train and hence it is a junction for most of the express trains. This station is the main junction for some of the trains coming from Howrah, Chennai and Mumbai CST. This station too has various passenger and express trains running.

Though this station is just an extension to Charbagh railway station, the building of Lucknow Junction station is a separate one. This building is built up of red sand stone.
